Love makes your soul crawl out from its hiding place.
~Zora Neale Hurston

March 21 - April 19 Aries
Aries folk tend towards jealousy and possessiveness and they are extremely faithful to their chosen ones. Best match: Aquarius, Leo, Gemini, Sagittarius. Here’s a film we can all learn from; the 1949 instructional film for teenagers, Dating Do’s and Don’ts. This film is part of the vast and fabulous Prelinger Archives, which, if you’ve never heard of them, can afford endless hours of fun. Go back to the innocent and repressed times of the late 40’s as our hero tries to decide who to invite to the Hi-Teen Carnival. “How do you choose a date? Who’s company would you enjoy? Well, one thing you can consider is looks. Woody thought of Janice and how good looking she was. He’d really have to rate to date somebody like her. Yes, he’d enjoy that. Except – well, it’s too bad Janice always acts so superior and bored. She’d make a fellow feel awkward and inferior.” Classic! Go back to high school for 12 minutes and 25 seconds. Some things never change.

April 20 - May 20 Taurus
Taureans love to feel that they have all bases covered and the situation perfectly assessed. Best match: Virgo and Capricorn. Because of your insatiable need to know, how about this; An Evening with Anne Bradshaw on Wednesday February 25 at 7pm. May 21 - June 20 Gemini
Those born under the sign of Gemini are sensitive to their partner’s needs, witty, and fun to be around. Best match: Aquarius and Libra. Our Gemini of the Week is American Beat poet Allen Ginsberg, born in 1926 on June 3rd. Ginsberg grew up in Paterson, New Jersey and as a child accompanied his mother to Communist Party meetings. At Columbia University in the early 40’s, he met Lucien Carr and subsequently met William Burroughs, John Clellon Holmes, and Jack Kerouac. The rest is, to be extremely trite, history. Suffice it to say that we miss him and his acerbic wit and his poetry, which was a pure valentine to the world. Check out 50 of his works for free here. Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It’s that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that’s what the poet does.A. Ginsberg.

June 21 - July 22 Cancer
Cancer’s symbol is The Crab for good reason; you keep your emotions closely guarded and an unkind remark can quickly send you back into your protective shell. Best match: Pisces and Scorpio. Submitted for your approval: the Bizarro World Valentine. Bond Street Chocolate (63 E. 4th St. in NYC’s East Village) has adorable little boxes of chocolate skulls – the perfect gift for your main squeeze, reminding you both of the impermanence of life and love. Some of the skulls are even dusted with metallic powder which makes them look like they’re wearable baubles. Jewelry you can eat. A box of six sets you back $14. A small price to pay for what’s got to be the awesomest and creepiest valentine gift ever.

July 23 - August 22 Leo
Leo, you love to be in the center of things. You dig parties and mingling and suchlike. Your closest friends and confidantes may not know that you’re also very vulnerable and easily hurt. Best match: Aries and Sagittarius. You’ve got three more days to enjoy Art and Love in Renaissance Italy at New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art, closing Monday February 16th. This exhibition explores the various exceptional objects created to celebrate love and marriage in the Italian Renaissance. Approximately 150 objects, dating from about 1400 to the mid-16th century, range from exquisite examples of jewelry given as gifts to the loving couple, to marriage portraits and paintings extolling sensual love, such as Venus and Cupid by Venetian artist Lorenzo Lotto. The exhibition also includes some of the rarest and most significant pieces of Renaissance glassware, cassone panels, birth trays, and drawings and prints of amorous subjects. I can’t think of a better place to celebrate the feast of St. Valentine.

August 23 - September 22 Virgo
Virgo people have a hard time with mistakes and faults – theirs and everyone else’s. The weight of the world is on their shoulders. They’ve got enough anxiety going on beneath their usually placid exterior for the rest of us. Best match: Taurus and Capricorn. Stoke at least some of your anxiety with the knowledge that the City of New York announced this week that they are unveiling a Facebook page and app to promote the use of condoms. Virgos are all about safe sex. Dr. Monica Sweeney, the assistant health commissioner for HIV prevention and control, told The New York Times, “By using Facebook, we can help millions of people spread the word about condoms.” The Facebook page includes a bunch of facts like the sobering thought that NYC has more AIDS cases than LA, San Francisco, Miami, and DC combined. And did you know there is an official city condom, designed by industrial designer Yves Behar?

September 23 - October 22 Libra
Librans have no problem making their feelings known. They will wait to find their true love, but once found, they’re extremely loyal and truly romantic. Best match: Gemini and Aquarius. Here’s something romantic for you; the Waffle House chain of restaurants is offering candle-lit dinners on Valentines Day. This was a runaway hit last year when they first tried it and 32 locations will be part of the special promotion this weekend. WH invites you to get “scattered, smothered and covered” in romance. Speaking of Waffle House, did you know that they’ve served no less than 957,041,599 cups of coffee since their first location opened in Avondale, Georgia in 1955? Read all about their history here and call now to make your Valentine dinner reservation!

October 23 - November 21 Scorpio
Scorpios love to win. In fact, they live to win. They’re very passionate and rarely let others know that they have an extremely sensitive side. Best match: Cancer and Pisces. It’s possible that a number of Scorpios were involved in the St. Valentine’s Day Massacre on February 14, 1929. Al Capone’s gang gunned down seven members of the Bugs Moran gang in Chicago, execution-style, against the wall of the SMG Cartage Company. Crazy fact: the wall (still with bloodstains and bullet marks) was later purchased at auction by Canadian businessman George Patey, who put the entire thing up in the men’s room of his nightclub, the Banjo Palace, in Vancouver. The wall was covered with a plexiglass coating and painted with targets. Patrons who could hit the targets would trigger a stream of water, flushing the urinal. How romantic! The nightclub closed in 1976 and Patey sold the wall, brick by brick, to collectors.

November 22 - December 21 Sagittarius
Sagittarians have a penchant of saying the wrong thing as they try to get on your good side. They’ll take extreme risks for love and need to preserve their own freedom in a relationship. Best match: Aries and Leo. I’ve got a film for you people. Released in 1966 and starring the splendid Alan Bates (I used to have such a crush on him), King of Hearts tells the story of a World War I soldier stationed in France. He is chosen by his brigade to go into a French town and deactivate a German bomb. He ends up being pursued by the enemy and, in order to escape, he hides in an insane asylum, whose inmates crown him the King of Hearts. I won’t spoil it any further by giving away more of the plot but if you’ve never seen it, you really need to watch this film. It’s a beautiful story.

December 22 - January 19 Capricorn
Capricorn! You’re traditional, loyal, and possessive. You can be depended on by your friends and loved ones. Commitment? Bring it on. Best match: Virgo and Taurus. For you, o goat, the album of the week: True Jit by the Bhundu Boys. It’s not new. It’s not even recent. But it’s worth tracking down. The Bhundu Boys were from Zimbabwe and they fashioned a joyous mix of chimurenga music married to influences from rock and roll, disco, country, and pop. In Africa, their style became known as jit. “Bhundu” meant “bush” or “jungle” and referred to the young boys who aided the guerrilla fighters in the war against the white minority government of Rhodesia in the 1970’s. Biggie Tembo, the lead singer, had been one of these boys. They rose pretty high in the 80’s, even opening for Madonna at Wembley. The band fell apart after Tembo left, and three members died of AIDS. It’s a sad ending to the story of this band, who made wonderful, uplifting music. Tembo’s vocals were at times spine chilling and lovely, as in “My Foolish Heart” on True Jit.

January 20 - February 18 Aquarius
Aquarians are naturally gregarious, moody, and emotional. Best match: Gemini and Libra. If I know Aquarians, and I believe that I do, I am certain sure that if they were buying nail polish, and they knew there was a color available called Orgasm, they would buy it. I found about it thanks to my friend, the wonderfully talented Holly Gleason, who wrote about this on her magnificent Yummy List, and I quote: Not quite peach. Not exactly pink. Somehow more succulent than flesh. Won’t call it pearl or iridescent, yet there is some shimmer to it. Matching NARS’ legendary blush - so named for cheek enhancing flush that comes naturally, this nail lacquer has a certain low impact beckon that sends the mind trotting off after far more intriguing daydreams.

February 19 - March 20 Pisces
Those of the Pisces persuasion tend to be a strange mix of contradictions. On the one hand, they’re sensitive and emotional. On the other hand, they’re hot headed and sometimes cruel. Best match: Cancer and Scorpio. For you I’ve saved the blog post of the week from Zone (Improvisations on Literature, Music, Film, The Spiritual, The Political, The Ridiculous by cowboyangel). This post minutely examines the Johnny Cash song Oh, What A Dream and what a read it is. Recorded in 1958 and 1959, you wouldn’t ordinarily think that this seemingly simple song had much going on besides a guy falling in love with a girl. Au contraire! Read all about the Tantric implications in the lyrics, Soviet spys, sex with angels, etc. And you can also hear Cash’s recording of the song in question.
